Franschhoek - Drakenstein's "French Quarter"
FRANSCHHOEK This
is the smallest town in the Drakenstein Valley, and initially called
Oliphantshoek. This because herds of elephants used to pass through the
valley to reach the valleys beyond. During the late 1600s many French
Huguenots settled in the valley, and the area became known as the
French Quarter, or Franschhoek.
